She Whispers
A mountain of grading and motherhood responsibility
Yet, she whispers it is time for poetry
To read, to write, to advocate for creativity
Don’t forget about women’s rights
This is how I fight
To fight my complacency, the complacency starving our humanity
For me, this is how she whispers, the voice of responsibility
Her breath warm with clarity
You see, you must ask and then listen, you must face the tension
The tension that you fear clarity more than all of this uncertainty
She whispers, and she is tender
She knows the art of surrender
It is in choice that we find our voice
Creativity, commitment, and innovation
Our imaginations require limitations, or they are fuel our anxiety
Creativity and women’s rights
Creativity starts with women, they need support
They grow and care for our children
In our systems, so many of them teach
History didn’t allow them to preach
You may disagree
But I am free, for I have chosen where to commit my creativity
Creativity is not something you have to find, no, it has to be protected
Our children's minds from 0-5, treasure and magic, you will find
Until it is neglected
Sit down, don’t play, just obey
Rejected
A poet, you say, that's what you want to be?
Best of luck, and what about your responsibilities?
Responsibilities that belonged to them, they were never for me
No room for passion, only pressure
She whispers, You will suffocate
The written word comes with a weight
The word is laced, a sensory present, a remembered past
We take on too much, too soon, too fast
Heavy with the expectations, rules, and laws of society
She whispers
Can you hear me?
Remember, you must choose
So many doors of responsibility in a world full of disparity
Her doors are open, but she must be chosen
Do you know where you want to commit your creativity?
Courageous, not in the least
I often fear myself when I speak
